What are good places to get new but cheap mountain bikes?

Posted on 28th November 2009 by admin in mountain bikes

I need a bike not more than $150. Apart from online places where can i browse for one? I recently went to Dick’s Sporting Goods and the prices are very high. Are walmart/target brands any good?

Everyone else already said it plainly….SAVE your money and do it right the first time or come away with a bike shaped object from Dick’s or Wal Mart and learn why you NEVER buy BSO’s from either of those places. Everyone starts somewhere and if you do then you will know why you dont buy there! Pay more= get more. Pay less= get junk! Get it now?

Try a wire brush.

Why are Road Bicycles not manufactured with Disc Breaks as with Mountain Bikes?

Posted on 28th November 2009 by admin in mountain bicycles

The two main reasons,
1) weight (roadies want the lightest parts)
2) cost (while some high-end rim breaks are costly, they don’t come close to a high-end set of disk breaks)

As a side note, mountain bikes will see worse conditions than a road bike. typically a mtn bike will see mud, sand and water on a regular basis, and disks will take this better that rim breaks. To a mtn biker stopping is just as important as going.

Why is it you never see Sport bikes listed in the Classic Motorcycle shows or Mags?

Posted on 28th November 2009 by admin in bikes

Sport riders seem to always say that the Harley riders are always bashing them Most of the time I see them kicking up all the dust. So what’s the deal? I have never really seen any Classic Sport Bikes. You might see an old Ducati motorcycle But they had the fast 250cc back in the 1960. And they are 90degree tiwn or a L tiwn. Are sport bike not old enough to be called classics or do they just meet the test of time?

classic sport bikes don’t look anything like their offspring of today maybe you have seen them but you just didn’t know what you were looking at. the old sport bikes blended in alot better with all other bikes, there wasn’t any plastic, you didn’t lean forward ect. on these older sport bikes (suzuki’s gs-e’s, honda cb-k’s &f’s kawasaki kz’s ect.)

How many bicycles should we build?

Posted on 28th November 2009 by admin in bicycles

Aki’s Bicycle Designs has determined that when x hundred bicycles are built, the average cost per bicycle is given by C(x)=0.8x^2-1.7x+8.716, where C(x) is in hundreds of dollars. How many bicycles should the shop build to minimize the average cost per bicycle? Round to the nearest integer.
The answer is 106. I’m not sure how to do this problem and the answers you’ve given so far aren’t the same. Can someone tell me how to arrive at 106

on differentiating,
C’(x)=1.6x-1.7
on differentiating
C”(x)>0
Now, C’(x)=0 gives x approximately equals to 1
So, the answer is 1

What should I look for when buying a mountain bike?

Posted on 25th November 2009 by admin in mountain bike

I want to start cycling or mountain biking but am basically new to this. What are some basic features I should look for and how much should I expect to spend for my first bike?

It depends on the area you want to ride and at what level!

However, I am sure there are plmety of people who thoought the same thing in your area and changed their minds! Therefore look for a used bike in thr recycler or other used goods place!
I would go to a bike shop first then buy a used one!
you should get a great used bike for $200 or less

What is heavy for a mountain bicycle?

Posted on 25th November 2009 by admin in mountain bicycles

im looking to buy one for about £250, but there all 13 -14kg is this too heavy? will changing the tyres make much of a difference?

No its not too heavy.
Unless your riding competitively the weight does not really matter
When riding on the flat your main resistance is air
If your going up steep hills the weight will make a difference but if you spend £1000 and get a 10kg bike you have saved 3-4Kg in weight. So just pedal more get fitter and loose that amount yourself in body weight.

What proportion of bicycles still use servicable cup and cone bearings?

Posted on 25th November 2009 by admin in bicycles

I am interested in the decline in the traditonal style assemblies. I would love to see them make a comeback - I hope they are not too rare, are they? Can you still buy them in shops?

All Shimano hubs still use cup and cone assemblies. Low end hubs and one piece cranks are usually cup and cone as well. Stronglight and a couple of Euro crank manufacturers still make ‘em this way… mostly those that are continuing with square taper spindles.

Many headset makers dropped cup and cone long ago but this application actually benefits from sealed bearing technology so far that sealed bearings generally have precision hardened races and very little play.

Depending on the model, Wellgo uses cup and cone in platform type pedals but most clipless models use cartridges.

Unfortunately, we will not see a comeback. The cost of making high tolerance bearing surfaces is extremely expensive compared to drilling a hole and press fitting a bearing that has already been made. I can only hope that Shimano maintains their hub designs.

The art of rebuilding and adjusting to perfection is fading, I fear.
