What mountain bikes have a RELAXED geometry?

Posted on 31st August 2009 by admin in mountain bikes

I am looking for a good quality full-suspension mountain bike with a more relaxed geometry due to recently damaged cervical (neck) vertebra. My old Turner Nitrous has just too radical a position for me. Any suggestions?

If you own a Turner Nitrous, then you’re rockin’ old school XC racer all the way. It is definitely way to radical for you now.

I’ve come to the conclusion that many of the newer bikes are designed for the serious weekend warrior, and that’s actually a really good thing. I’m leaning toward the All Mountain category for my next bike myself.

For the mass produced bikes out there, I personally like the Specialized bikes. The Enduro is a sweet ride with 6" of travel and a great upright seating position. For those with a bit deeper pockets, the Santa Cruz Blur LT (not the XC) or the Nomad would be a great choice.

But what matters most is what works best for you. There is simply no replacing going to a bike shop and test riding bikes till you find one that fits you and your needs. Sometimes you can rent them for a day or even rent them at a mountain.

Whatever you decide to do, happy trails!

recent perfomance of mountain bicycles?

Posted on 31st August 2009 by admin in mountain bicycles

in terms of market share and profitability

The success story of the mountain bike has been the focus of much of the specialty industry in recent years. The category has apparently matured, however, and it represented 28% of all bicycles sold in the year 2007 by specialty bicycle stores, according to estimates from the NBDA (representing bicycle stores, not mass merchants). This figure was down from the years 2005 and 2006, and from the high point of approximately 60% several years before.

However, mountain bikes continue to be the largest single bicycle category for specialty bicycle stores. The decline may also be somewhat misleading, because the "comfort bike" category could actually be considered a modification of the mountain bike, and are comparable in many ways to low-end mountain bikes. "Comfort" bicycles look a lot like mountain bikes, but feature soft saddles, more upright seating position and easier gearing than the traditional mountain bike.

What are these bikes called, the one with super slim tires and tire rims?

Posted on 31st August 2009 by admin in bikes

I am searching online, for bikes, with the super slim tires, as they are very fast.
But what are these called?
I thought these are called "road bikes", but when I search for road bikes, I see bikes with normal sized tires and tire rim.

–> Also are these slim tire bikes very bad and unstable on even slight mud and gravel?

Yes, road bikes have the slimmest tires. They should have 700c x 23 tires, which is the standard size these days. There’s no point in going any slimmer.

A little mud or gravel isn’t going to hurt. If you were going to encounter more gravel roads, I would try 700c x 25 tires, which fit on most road bikes as well. The stability of the bike depends on a lot of factors, including handling due to the geometry of the bike. Road bikes can be pretty versatile- most companies have models that are designed to be more stable for longer, rougher rides.

The Bicycles: Oh No, It’s Love-Directed by Joel MacLeod

Posted on 29th August 2009 by admin in bicycles - Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , ,

The video for Oh No It’s Love, was written and Directed and Shot by fourth year NSCAD Film Major, Joel MacLeod. The video was shot as a grade school play that chronicles the tale of a not so heroic knight (Matt Beckett) who attempts to rescue a distressed drum-playing princess,(Dana Snell) held captive in a tower. He quickly discovers that the tower is guarded by an angry fire breathing Dragon (Drew Smith), and must rely on his trusty Unicorn (Todd Chapman) stead to harness the power of love to save the day.
The video was shot in between 11:30am and 4pm during a sunny October day. It was shot in Halifax, Nova Scotia, in NSCAD University’s board room. The costumes and props were made by Ben Stephenson, Matt Stackhouse, Tiffany Westwood, and myself. The unicorn mask made by the me too and looks more like an under evolved Chinese Dragon then it does a unicorn, but I insisted it the horn would give it away. The Dragon looks a lot more like a dragon, probably because it was made by felt enthusiast, Ben Stephenson. The knight’s wooden tinfoil helmet, cardboard sword and gloves, were made by Matt Stackhouse, who based them on a sword and gloves he made for a Power Ranger Halloween costume when he was young. The beautiful paper-bag princess dress was created by seamstress extraordinaire, Tiffany Westwood and adds a much needed feminine touch to the wardrobe. She also was the istant camera operator. The spot style lighting was set-up and coordinated by Adam Rafuse. And the set was built and designed by me and Ben Stephenson, who together are a craft making force not to be reckoned with. Todd Chapman, is the magnificent young thespian who stood as the unicorn for Andrew Scott who couldn’t make the shoot. Dayle Hendrix kept us at a good working pace, and managed to whip up a shooting schedule based on the storyboards, in 5 secs flat. Lindsay Macpherson, Ryan Ritchie, Todd Chapman, and Tiffany Westwood (who saved us with her knowledge of fabric drapery),also helped set-up the set, and did some amazing cloud jiggling work.
Ryan Ritchie was also the on-set photographer. You can find the shoot photos at http://www.flickr.com/photos/ryantro/sets/72157609211357789/ Jenna Murphy and Lindsay Macpherson used their brute force to stabilize the tower while Matt scaled it. Jesse Cappe’s wizardly like fingers put this bad boy together in the editing room.

Matt Beckett did a lovely lip sinking performance for the video, while Dana put so much enthusiasm into her drumming she broke the cardboard sticks. Drew sat quietly by until it was his time to be filmed, when he then laid down some slick dance moves that would make the king of pop himself spew in awe. Todd showed of some real bass playing chops with his infamous side sway wiggle. The unicorn and dragon masks fell off almost every take but Todd and Drew handled this set-back like pros. Peanut butter and Jam sandwiches were made for lunch in the spirit of the video, but remained virtually untouched by all. It must be a kid only thing. Ben however, had his first ever PB and J sandwich that day to which made up for the lack of consumption by the rest of the cast and crew. The band was amazing to work with and a good time was had by all. The crew later all went to the Bicycles show at the Coconut Grove that evening for the Fuzzy Logic Showcase where Dana and Andrew played their first song sporting the Dragon and Unicorn mask which fell off quickly during the first verse. Bummer… Maria, the bands manager, was super friendly and hospitable providing me with a shiny new custom “B” T-shirt at the show. This was truly a great and memorable day…. Here is the video that will always remind me of it. Thanks Bicycles, Fuzzy Logic Recordings, and Crew! Hope you enjoy the video!
